A Dead Poem – Abstract Existence
A strong debut that lays a solid foundation for A Dead Poem’s future, even if it occasionally plays it safe. Fans of gothic doom and melodic death metal will find much to love here.
A Dead Poem’s debut album, Abstract Existence, brings a wave of dark nostalgia that harkens back to the early ‘90s, fusing elements of gothic doom, melodic death metal, and black metal. The Brazilian duo, clearly inspired by titans like Paradise Lost and Katatonia, offers a musical experience that is both familiar and evocative, paying homage to their influences while carving out their own niche.
The album begins with “In Forgotten Dimensions,” a track that immediately sets the tone with its hauntingly melancholic guitar riffs layered over ethereal synth work. The slow, deliberate pacing immerses the listener, conjuring a bleak yet beautiful atmosphere. The title track, “Abstract Existence,” follows with a similarly sorrowful melody, its whispered, raspy vocals enhancing the desolation. The interplay between delicate instrumentation and restrained aggression is particularly effective here.
“Before the Rising Sun” shifts gears slightly, introducing a faster rhythm that adds an unexpected groove without losing the overarching sense of melancholy. This track serves as a breath of fresh air amid the album’s predominantly somber mood, showcasing the duo’s ability to weave dynamic shifts into their compositions.
The fourth track, “Dressed in Black,” epitomizes the album’s gothic doom essence. Its harmonic leads and balanced use of growled and clean vocals deliver a chilling experience, akin to wandering through a frost-covered forest. The mood is oppressive yet strangely cathartic, making it one of the standout tracks on the album.
“Obedience” is perhaps the darkest song on the record, with an understated menace lurking just beneath its surface. The guitar work here feels particularly sinister, giving the track a subdued yet potent intensity. The album closes with “Silent Tears Fall,” a masterful finale that blends gentle, sorrowful passages with harsher, raw elements. The emotional weight of this track lingers long after the final note fades.
While Abstract Existence doesn’t stray far from its influences, it excels at what it sets out to do: creating a melancholic journey that is immersive and memorable. The production quality, while intentionally raw and atmospheric, complements the music perfectly, adding to the nostalgic charm.
